Of course a couple of days of break was covered with holidays, but for those that weren’t we had to find ways to entertain ourselves. Some days were spent hanging around the house in our pj’s playing games, but other days we had to actually get dressed and out of the house.
We decided one day to head into DC and see the newly re-opened National Museum of American History. What a wonderful museum. For me very emotional, too. We saw a beautiful exhibit of The Star Spangle Banner and learned more of the history of the song that became our National Anthem. We also got to see on display the very flag which inspired Francis Scott Key to write the song.
We were also very lucky to see the exhibit of The Gettysburg Address written in Abraham Lincoln’s own hand.
While wandering the gift shop, we found a book I had wanted after reading about it on another blog but was unable to purchase on Amazon. Sean said I could get it (like he could stop me) but only if I agreed to make something from it on New Year’s Day. I choose the Texas Governor’s Mansion Cowboy Cookies in honor of our current’s President’s last few weeks in office.
Hannah took these two cookies down to Sean while he was watching the game. When she came back up, she said "Daddy said that was the best cookie he has ever had!" Hannah didn’t like them as much, but I think it may be the pecans. I thought they were yummy…tho my favorite cookie is Hyacinth’s Everything Cookie.
Another day we drove to Deep Creek to go snow tubing! What fun.
Hannah also had a friend over and is having a sleep-over this weekend before the end of break. I can’t believe it is almost over! I love having my family home, but one has to go back to school and the other has to earn a living. I have lots I plan on doing around the house in the next month, then I will be heading down to the Keys for a long weekend. I am looking forward to it but I am going to miss my family while I am gone.
